Average Rate Of Change Calculator
Calculate the average rate of change between two points using the difference quotient.
Average Rate Of Change Calculator
Average rate of change
Enter two points to calculate the secant slope.
This is an interval average, not an instantaneous derivative.
Formula version 1.0.0
How to use this calculator
- Enter coordinates for the first point.
- Enter coordinates for the second point with a different x-value.
- Select Calculate.
- Read Δx, Δy, and the average rate Δy/Δx.
Symbols and units
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit or domain |
|---|---|---|
x₁,y₁ | First point | input/output units |
x₂,y₂ | Second point | input/output units |
Δx | x₂−x₁ | input units |
Δy | y₂−y₁ | output units |
Checked examples
Increasing interval
Inputs: (0,2) and (4,10)
Calculation: Δy=8; Δx=4; rate=8÷4
Result: 2 output units per input unit
Output rises by two on average for each input unit.

Decreasing interval
Inputs: (1,8) and (3,2)
Calculation: Δy=−6; Δx=2; rate=−6÷2
Result: −3
The negative rate indicates average decrease.

Assumptions, rounding, and limits
- Coordinates are finite.
- The two x-values differ.
- Units within each axis are consistent.
- The result is a secant slope, not necessarily an instantaneous rate.
Frequently asked questions
Why are equal x-values rejected?
They make Δx zero, so the difference quotient is undefined.
Does point order matter?
Reversing both points changes both differences' signs and leaves the rate unchanged.
Is this a derivative?
No. It is the average rate across an interval, represented by a secant slope.
